I had the same problem ("Too many errors encountered in playlist. Playback has stopped.", nothing plays) with Amarok 2.0.2 using Ubuntu 9.10. It was corrected when I installed this (using synaptic package manager):

libxine1-ffmpeg

Before doing this I also installed "phonon-backend-xine", may be it is also needed (not sure).
If does not work, try to remove "phonon-backend-gstreamer" (will also uninstall amarok) and reinstall "photon-backend-xine" and "amarok". Then reboot. This worked for me.

Go to your data area and create a folder called "! Audiograbber output" Bring up Audiograbber. It should look like this:

Click on Settings and browse to point to the folder called "! Audiograbber output". Click ok. It should look like this:

These settings may give you extremely high quality (up to 320 because of Variable, next to highest quality using VBR1, Joint Stereo, quality high, and Original). Get the LAME codec from the Audiograbber main web page at: http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/. This web page also has an excellent Guided Tour of AudioGrabber.

If you are listening to a CD, Freedb will take you to the Internet to find the name of the CD and the names of the tracks on the CD.

If your computer is not really fast you might want to disconnect from the Internet or at least shut down all browsers so that the conversion from wave to MP3 is not interrupted unnecessarily. When you are ready click Grab. When Grab comes up it should look like this:

Go to the menu, File, and click on Line In Sampling. It should look like this:

If Audiograbber can hear anything the meters will jump. Name the file anything then rename it to it's actual name after the data is created. Go manual. If Audiograbber can not hear anything check elsewhere to see if a certain audio channel is muted - maybe your sound card has a mixer. Maybe your operating system or your mother board has a sound mixer. Look for a switch called "What you hear...".

Comme j’en étais rendu à la “croisée dégoûtante” (debout sur une seule jambe, à minuit tapant, au milieu d’une croisée de chemins isolés, les bras en croix, avec une poule décapitée et saignante sur la tête, ses deux pattes attachées sous mon menton), j’ai fait une ultime tentative pour syntoniser RDI en direct sur ma machine Ubuntu 9.04. J’ai simplement suivi les instructions de arobillard qui, à la suite de ma chronique d’hier, citait la procédure recommandée par Dominic et Maxime de “la liste Ubuntu Québec”. Ce que j’ai fait et, eurêka!, ça a marché ! Cliquez sur la vignette qui suit un peu plus bas et vous verrez !

Je vous la rappelle. Primo, il faut vraiment faire disparaître “Totem”, le lecteur vidéo Mozilla fournit par défaut avec Ubuntu. Pour ce faire, on procède à la dure. On ouvre le terminal et on tape :

sudo aptitude purge totem-mozilla

Secundo, on installe le lecteur “VLC” et son essentiel plugiciel :

sudo aptitude install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc

Tertio, on installe un petit bazar articulé autour de “MPlayer” :

sudo aptitude install mozilla-mplayer lame livemedia-utils

C’est radical ! RDI se met à fonctionner sans plus nous faire suer. Merci arobillard !

Incidemment, je vous ai peu parlé de la facilité de configuration graphique d’Ubuntu 9.04. Cliquez sur la vignette à la gauche du premier paragraphe, vous verrez un résultat rendu possible avec des éléments déjà présent lorsqu’on installe le produit. Mais si vous voulez en avoir plus, beaucoup plus, incluant quelques pingouins, il en existe de très grande quantités que vous pouvez télécharger et installer en vous servant du gestionnaire d’apparence “Art Manager” (sudo apt-get install gnome-art). Wow !

Interested in having the “filmstrip” view as an option within Konqueror so you can view photos? This can easily be added by doing the following:

1. Close any open Konqueror windows
2. Open Synaptic package manager by clicking KMenu > System > Synaptic Package Manager
3. Type in your root password when prompted
4. Click the Search icon and type "Gwenview"
5. Mark gwenview for installation and click Apply

Now when you re-launch Konqueror, you should now have a button that looks like a camera on your toolbar. Click this and Konqueror will enter filmstrip view mode, which shows image thumbnails on the left and a larger image on the right.

je suis avec attention les messages et diverses reponses qui sont postés sur ce forum pour enrichir mes connaissances en informatique mais là, j'avoue etre bloqué, j'essaie de rentrer dans le bios d'un TOSHIBA satellite 4090 pour lui demander de booter sur le cd rom et je ne connais pas la commande pour y acceder.

J’ai eu le même problème, même en sélectionnant "francais" au boot, il se configure en anglais avec un clavier Qwerty (taper "de,o" pour le mot de passe, et pas "demo").

Il parait qu’il existe une ligne de code à entrer au démarrage pour avoir le clavier te la console en français, mais pour KDE (et OpenOffice,Firefox,...), il faut effectivement télécharger les packages correspondants.

Pour ce faire, il suffit de les rechercher avec synaptics (sources.list à jour ici).

Sinon, ca reste une excellente distribution, avec une détection impec’ du matériel !

To maintain a greater level of compatibility with sound cards, the Mepis Live-CD uses an 8-bit sampling rate, but most sound cards since 1997 have been capable of 16-bit sampling or sometimes even higher.

You can change the sampling rate of your sound card from 8-bit to 16-bit and dramatically improve the audio quality of almost everything you play through Mepis very easily.

Open Konqueror File Manager (or your home folder) and type "settings:/Sound/" without the quotes into the address bar and press return.

To change the audio sampling rate, click on "Sound System", then the Hardware tab, then change the audio quality from "8 Bits (low)" to "16 Bits (high)", click the apply button and your sound system will be restarted with the 16-Bit settings.

To hear the difference between 8 and 16-bit, before you make the change, instead of clicking on "Sound System", click on "System Notifications" choose "KDE is starting up" in the top half of the window, then under Actions, click the play button to play the selected sound file and listen carefully to the audio output, listening for background hissing and overall clarity. Repeat this step after making the change and compare the difference, you should hear a much nicer sound.

XMMS Presets

Many would have noticed that XMMS (the MP3 Player) ship without the Presets.

Here is how you can install them:

• If XMMS is running, close it

• Download the 'XMMS Presets'

 wget http://xmms.org/misc/winamp_presets.gz

• Install the 'XMMS Presets'

 gunzip -c winamp_presets.gz > ~/.xmms/eq.preset
ou
gunzip -c winamp_presets.gz > /home/denis/.xmms/eq.preset

• Launch XMMS, hit the Preset button, and select load-->Preset from the pop-up menu

• Choose the settings you want to use

Installing the Java Runtime Environment

First you need to check multiverse repository enabled or not after that open a terminal window. Since you are going to be installing the JRE and the web browser plug-in, you’ll be using the following command from a terminal

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

Once it downloads the packages and begins the installation, you’ll get a screen that contains the Sun Operating System Distributor License for Java and hit Enter to continue. You’ll see a dialog that asks you if you agree with the DLJ license terms. Select Yes, and hit Enter; the JRE will finish installing.

Testing Java Runtime Environment

You’ll want to confirm that your system is configured properly for Sun’s JRE. This is a two-step process.

First, check that the JRE is properly installed by running the following command from a terminal.

java -version
